October 2011 Wrap Up

Thanks to everyone who came along tonight, especially those regulars who traveled from afar (in not-so-nice weather) to join in the fun.

Big thanks as always to Matt Bone on double bass, Luis Cristia on projection and sound and our wonderful special guest Sara Tindley. Everyone wanted to play Sara’s song Timethrough again… though time did not not permit. (ha ha… he he he… heh! cough!). Sara is without dispute one of the finest singer/songwriters in our community. She is as humble and approachable as she is poetic and talented… a sign of a true star. (video coming soon)

As an extra special treat we had an unexpected visit from Renee Searles with Mark Patterson. She will be appearing at the Mullum Bowlo on Saturday November 12th from 7:30 with an A-team Band. Don’t miss it!!

Numbers were down slightly, most likely due to the weather (wusses), still we all had a ball and moved the grey matter up a level with our 5 new songs. Special mention to Alan Hill who got amongst it with his very manly voice. More please Alan. Check this out.

Tonight also marked the first public appearance of the Uke Mullum Troupe formed specifically for the Mullum Music Festival. We performed a rendition of young (7 years old mind) Rosie Eadie’s ‘I Went To Paris On A Unicorn’, which went down a treat. The Mullum Uke Troupe is sown up, though If you want to be a part of the Mullum Music Festival’s first inaugural Street Parade see details here.

Next Mullum Uke Night is Thursday July 20th, 2023
It\'s our 12th birthday celebration and the theme is \'FRIENDS\'

Sara has a new album out and we will all be perfoming the Title track – TIME which just so happens is a co-write with myself (STU). The music has been online for while now. Here’s a vid with a demonstration of the chords and the strumming. Practice it up and be confident strumming along with Sara on the night.

Wonderful Workshop – Sublime Concert

Those of you who came to The AJ Leonard and Jenny Rowlings workshop and concert would not have been disappointed. The workshop was fun and informative and we all walked away with sheet music for Bert Kaempfert’s ‘A Swingin Safari’ and another great song from the 30’s ‘Don’t Sing Aloha When I Go’. There was somg great players there on the day so the songs sounded pretty together. Next The Concert. I was flabbergasted at the precision of the playing and the way the duo worked together with the simpatico an outfit only possesses after years of playing together. I could have listened to another hours worth. Amazing arrangements executed with style and virtuosity. I left feeling inspired.

Mullum Music Festival

Hiya, you may have heard by now that Stukulele is putting together a special troupe to perform a few numbers at the Mullum Music Festival (and prior to that Mullum Public schools November Fair). After consulting with the organisers of the MMF it has come to light that only 8 performers can be accommodated with a Saturday Festival ticket. So regrettably some of you folk who are keen may miss out this time. To see the minimum requirements and to express your interest in performing. please click here.

September Songs Online Now

Finally the new songs for the next get together are online. The Mullum Music Festival has been taking up my time in the last few weeks. Should be a great festival… It’s a killer line up including my new favourite indie rockstar – Anna Coddington. I love her songs so much that I have included her tune Little Islands in the songs for September. I’m hoping that you will work it up so we can play it at The Mullum Music Festival… yes that’s right Uke Mullum is on the bill!!! So if you can’t afford the very reasonably priced tickets, learn the song (really well) and you can at least get into Uke Mullum’s performance for free. (you gotta cut it though).  Don’t Miss Uke Master A J Leonard on Sunday October 2 at the Mullum Bowlo. Grab your flyer next Wednesday for $2 off at the door.

Uke Master AJ Leonard

FRESH FROM A TOUR performing across the USA, internationally recognised ukulele master, AJ Leonard and cellist Jenny Rowlands return for their second East Coast tour of Australia. They will be performing at Mullumbimby Bowling ClubSunday 2 October, 2pm.

Their recent US tour included performances at the New York Ukulele Festival and the Ukulele Academy of North Carolina. He also performed on the West Coast at Santa Cruz (host to the largest ukulele club in the world) and at San Francisco, before appearing at the Monterey Wine Country Ukulele Retreat.

There, AJ was one of a feature group of well-known tutors and ukulele performers including James Hill, Andy Roberts, Del Ray, Brooke Adams and Gerald Moore.

Equally at home playing Beatles classics as he is with popular 40’s and 50’s ukulele standards, AJ Leonard is well known by ukulele devotees around Australia for his amazing dexterity, finely-crafted arrangements and breezy singing style.

“The renaissance of interest in the ukulele in the USA is amazing, and it’s catching on everywhere,” AJ said.

“The highlight of our recent tour however was a meeting in Honolulu with Roy Sakuma, the legendary teacher and organiser of the world’s longest running ukulele festival at Waikiki.”

At the Bowlo, A.J. Leonard will give a one hour workshop then with Jenny Rowlands – an accomplished and polished performer in her own right – will weave their magic in a not-to-be-missed concert.

Workshop – Strumming The American Soundtrack

From Tin Pan Alley and the Hapa Haole songs of the 20’s and 30’s to the contemporary sound of the 60’s and 70’s: from the classic musicals of the 30’s and 40’s to the modern cinema and TV music, this workshop will take you on a nostalgic journey of discovery.

Many examples will be given to show the enormous diversity of the greatest musical catalogue of the 20th century. You are invited to learn some songs from both ends of the spectrum incorporating unique strumming styles learned from someone who had played in the 1920’s and finger picking techniques that A.J. has developed over 30 years.

ENTRY $25 AT THE DOOR.

Mullum Bowlo is on Jubilee Ave. Mullumbimby (past the pool towards the golf club)
